March - Newsletter 19 (31st March 2014)

Dear Parents/Carers,

Maths Week - We started our maths week with a special assembly in which Mrs Love set each class a shape building Easter egg maths challenge! Quantum Theatre also came in to school today to perform ‘The Countback Kid’ a maths play which really got the children thinking. There will be lots of fun maths going on this week showing the children what an interesting, relevant and useful subject it is. On Friday we have our maths dressing up competition with prizes for the best costumes – please don’t worry if you haven’t sorted anything out for this yet though – some numbers, sums or shapes well placed on a t-shirt will be just fine!

Dinner Money - Please can you help to make sure dinner money payments come in to school on a Monday morning as we are having a lot of late payments at the moment which makes the administration difficult. It is a good idea to pay a half term or term in advance if you’re able to do this as it saves the Monday morning rush for the cheque book! Thank you.

Sport at Lane End - We are having a great deal of sporting success this year with excellent results in football and cross country and now at the swimming gala as well. On Friday, our swimming gala team came 4th overall in Stockport and 2nd in the small school’s competition. The cross country runners performed very well in their first ever season of events – the girls’ team came second overall in Stockport and the boys’ team came fifth. Individually, Lucy Unwin came third overall and Jasmine Brown was the winning girl in Stockport and was also part of the Stockport team which won the Greater Manchester Cross Country Championship on 22nd March.

Steve Vernon, who is the National Cross Country Champion, came in to school last Monday to talk to the children about his running career and the effort and practice he has had to put in to get where he is today linking his talk to our work on having a Growth Mindset. He told the children that he started running when he was about 8 years old but that at the time he wasn’t the best in his class. However, he kept going and going and gradually got better and better and learnt from all of the set backs along the way.

PTA - Thank you very much to everyone who came and supported our Family Sports and Fun Night and to the PTA for organising – we’re getting closer to our total for the Trim Trail. The Summer Fair will hopefully get us to our first milestone of £5000 when we will be able to buy the first part of the trim trail. The Pupil Forum have been meeting to discuss the children’s ideas for the trail which will be placed to the left of the tree in between the two playgrounds.

The date of the PTA Summer Fair is now on Saturday 14th June from 12 – 3pm (not in May as previously advertised). A PTA Newsletter is on the reverse with more information about PTA events.

We aim to be approachable and work in partnership with parents, so if there is anything you wish to discuss, please do not hesitate to come and talk to us.

We break up after school on Friday and the children are due back in on Wednesday 23rd April as it is Easter Monday and then an INSET day on the Tuesday. Have a lovely Easter break everyone.

Yours sincerely,

James Twigg
