December - Newsletter 8 (1st December 2014)

Dear Parents/Carers,

The PTA Christmas Fair was a huge success raising over £2500 for school and making a fantastic contribution to our trim trail project. Thank you very much for all of your support with the non-uniform days, selling raffle tickets and attending the fair. We had more helpers than ever before this year which made a really big difference. A big thank you to Bev Sangster and all of the PTA and helpers – you did a great job! The children’s Christmas mugs sold very well but if you couldn’t make the fair and wanted to buy your child’s Christmas mug, please fill in the form at the bottom of the newsletter and send it in to school this week.

School Christmas Dinner

We are inviting all children to have a school Christmas Dinner on Thursday 11th December. If your child normally has a school dinner they will receive this automatically. If your child normally has a packed lunch  but would like a school dinner on this day then please fill in the attached slip and return it to school with £2.30 (exact change or a cheque made payable to SMBC Lane End Primary School) in an envelope with your child’s name and marked ‘School Christmas Dinner’.  Please reply by the morning of Thursday 4th December at the latest – thank you! We also invite all children to bring a cracker into school on this day for lunchtime to add to the festive occasion.

Mission Christmas - a couple of our parents have asked if we can get involved in Key 103’s Christmas appeal and Amanda Fry has kindly agreed to organise this for us. If you’d like to help the details are below, thank you:

A Happy Christmas for ALL children

Our school is collecting gifts for sick and disadvantaged kids to help make this Christmas happy for all children in the Greater Manchester area.

Sadly 1 in 3 children are living in poverty, and Greater Manchester has the 4th highest levels of child poverty in the country. Mission Christmas (run by Manchester radio station Key103) aims to ensure as many children as possible wake up with a present on Christmas Day, no matter what their situation.

Our school will be acting as a collection point. Please just buy one extra present this year – a gift that will make Christmas 2014 special for a child living in poverty. We're looking for new and unwrapped gifts suitable for babies, toddlers, children and teenagers aged 0 to 18 years. Gifts can be sent in with the children from Monday 1st December to Friday 12th December. Thank you.

Angels’ Delight the children went to Cheadle Hulme Methodist Church to watch a theatrical nativity - it was told from the angel’s perspective with a great deal of humour and the children really enjoyed it.Thank you to the church for organising this for us.Year 4 couldn’t make the show as they were at Manchester Museum studying ancient Egypt – there’s so much going on!

Christmas Post Box - The school Christmas Post Box will be available for Christmas cards from next Monday – please make sure that the envelope has a full name and class on it. Sending Christmas cards is very worthwhile writing practice, particularly for the younger children.

A Message from ChildLine: The ChildLine Schools Service has recently visited all children in years 5 & 6 to provide them with key messages about keeping safe.  It can be beneficial for these messages to be reinforced at home. The NSPCC has developed some guides for all parents of primary school aged children  to speak to your child about keeping safe – called the Underwear Rule.

You can find guides to the Underwear Rule to help you have simple conversations about keeping safe from abuse at www.nspcc.org.uk/underwear.

You can speak to an advisor for further advice or request a hard-copy guide for parents and carers by phoning the NSPCC Helpline on 0808 800 5000. You can also visit www.nspcc.org.uk/parents for other advice on keeping your child safe.

We aim to be approachable and work in partnership with parents, so if there is anything you wish to discuss, please do not hesitate to come and talk to us.

Yours sincerely,  James Twigg
