February - Newsletter 15 (23rd February 2015)

Dear Parents/Carers,

Welcome back and I hope you had a good half term break.

We have started back to an exciting scene on the playground this morning – a hot air balloon had landed on the junior playground and Grandad, a character from the book ‘Tom and the Island of Dinosaurs’, was there to greet the children as they arrived at school. He came into assembly and talked to the children about his adventures going to Dinosaur Island with his grandchildren Tom and Katy and read them the story as they sat captivated! Each class was then presented with a special parcel. The children went back to class and opened the parcels which contained a letter from Tom and Katy asking them to help by completing some writing tasks, the parcels also contained some fiction and non-fiction books about dinosaurs. We are using this exciting stimulus and the books as a basis for our ‘reading for writing week’ which started today. The children are in store for a fun and rewarding week as they use their imagination in this make-believe scenario to inspire some great writing – we’re happy for them to know it is make-believe but are insistent on the great writing! Grandad also asked the children to look out for some specimens including fossils and dinosaur eggs and said he would be back on Friday to find out what the children have done during the week. We’ll put some photos on to the website (in ‘school events’) as the week progresses. Some of the tasks will require the children to explore the outside areas, including the field, so please ensure your child has appropriate footwear and a coat. Thank you.

World Book Day – Thursday 5th March is World Book Day. Children can come into school dressed as a book character on Friday 6th March (Thursday is the Year 6 class assembly and we’d like a better chance to look at the costumes in assembly on Friday). Children will also receive a £1 book token which they can use to buy the special World Book Day books from a book shop or to get £1 off another book. Find out more at: http://worldbookday.com/

Parents Evenings – Parents Evenings are on Monday 9th March and Wednesday 11th March. Monday will be the later night. Sign up will be from 8am on Tuesday 3rd March – please come into school to sign up or phone if you can’t make it in. We hope to see all parents there.

Red Nose Day – the PTA are holding a Red Nose Day Disco on Friday 13th March. There will be a separate disco for the infants and juniors with the money raised going to Comic Relief. A letter will come home shortly about this event.

We aim to be approachable and work in partnership with parents, so if there is anything you wish to discuss, please do not hesitate to come and talk to us.

Yours sincerely,

James Twigg
