July - Newsletter 24 (1st July 2016)

Dear Parents/Carers,

It has been a busy week with a great deal to engage and inspire the children’s learning and development.

Infant Sports Day

Thank you to all of the parents and relatives who came to support on Monday – it was a great event and the children did brilliantly!  I will put some photos onto the website soon.

Junior Sports Day – we are hopeful to go ahead on Monday (4th July) starting at 9:30am – parents and relatives are more than welcome to come along and support.

Come and Play with the Hallé – our choir and instrumentalists had a wonderful opportunity to see and play and sing with the world famous Hallé orchestra at the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester. It was a fantastic interactive concert and the children thoroughly enjoyed it. Thank you to Stockport Music Service, Mr Gosling (our woodwind teacher), Miss Yates (our guitar teacher), Mrs Stutfield and Mrs Toyne (our choir leaders) and the Hallé for such a memorable morning. Photos on the website soon!

Council Chambers – Our Year 6 children did us proud on Tuesday in the Council Chambers at Stockport Town Hall. We arranged for a debate which the children had prepared for and presented brilliantly. We were joined by children from St Simons and St Peters school – our Connecting Classroom partners in Stockport. Increasing the children’s ability and opportunity to debate is on our action plan following our visit to Zambia where we saw the children debate so articulately and confidently. Our children certainly did that and we are planning further opportunities in the future. The new Mayor of Stockport was present for the debate and spoke enthusiastically about the children’s contributions, skills and behaviour.

Volunteers – we have some fantastic volunteers in school who help us to provide the best education and opportunities we can for the children. Two of our volunteers do a great job as librarians – organising the books and helping the younger children change their books: Ms Claire Webster and Mrs Val Graham. After doing such a good job for a long time, completely voluntarily, Mrs Graham is finishing this role at the end of the school year. We wanted to say a big thank you to Mrs Graham and also to find out if there was anyone who would be interested in helping in the library alongside Ms Webster. Please do let us know if you are interested and thank you again to all of our wonderful volunteers!

Strike Action – You may have heard that the NUT have called for strike action on Tuesday 5th July. School will be open as normal as our teachers aren’t striking. However we all feel strongly about the issues over which the strike has been called including school funding cuts and teacher shortages.

Open Evening – you are all warmly invited to join us for our open evening between 6pm and 8pm on Wednesday 13th July. We encourage you to look around the whole school and talk to your child’s class teacher from this year and introduce yourselves to your child’s class teacher for next year too. There will be a book fair during open evening selling half price books – perfect for summer holiday reading. There will also be an art exhibition. Each child has created a piece of art work which has been professionally framed and will be on display in the hall. This is available for you to purchase on the night or order if you can’t make it. More details will come home about this soon.

Classes for next year - The teachers and teaching assistants for next year are shown below. There are no changes to the teachers or their year groups but some changes to year groups for the teaching assistants as placement depends on the needs of each class. All of the children will have a lesson with their new teacher before the summer holidays and carry out other transition activities too.

Race to Rio Cycle to School Week  – Mr Vallance has organised our cycle to school week and this is taking place next week (4th – 8th July) – apologies to anyone who got an early version of the letter with the wrong date on it! Please ensure that your children are wearing a helmet if they are cycling to school. We held a similar event last year which was very successful and which included a slow bike race. We will be having a slow bike race again this year which will take place on Friday. Any children who cycle to school that day and have their helmet will be able to take part.

Sponsored Jog for Sports Relief and Olympic Baton Relay – on Friday 15th July there is an Olympic relay between partaking schools in Stockport. At 2:45pm the baton should arrive at Lane End on the final leg of its journey as we have the honour of being the final destination of our leg of the event. All of the children will be there to greet it and cheer as it is run around the field by some of the children from Nevill Road Primary School and then handed over to our runners for its final celebratory laps around the field.

The baton relay will be the culmination of an event which is starting at 2pm on the same afternoon. We are holding a sponsored jog (run or walk depending on each child) around the field in aid of Sports Relief. Children will be encouraged to aim for 3 laps around the field (with a break in between as they will be going around in groups of 5 from each class one lap at a time) or more if they can! We will send a sponsor form home next week and encourage you to support your child by helping them get as many sponsors as you can for this worthy cause - 50% of the money raised by Sports Relief is used to make a difference right here in the UK, and 50% goes towards transforming lives across the world’s poorest communities, see more using this link: (http://www.sportrelief.com/where-your-money-goes )

ParentPay – your child is bringing home an addressed envelope today with details of your log-in for ParentPay along with some more information about how it works. We suggest logging on and setting up an account straight away although we won’t start using the system until September – thank you for your support with this we hope that it should result in a better payment system for both home and school.

We aim to be approachable and work in partnership with parents, so if there is anything you wish to discuss, please do not hesitate to come and talk to us.

Yours sincerely,
