July - Newsletter 24 (6th July 2017)

Dear Parents/Carers,

We’ve had a busy few weeks with a great deal going on in school:

Our musicians and junior choir had a wonderful experience at the Bridgwater Hall at the ‘Come and Play with the Halle’ event. Our infant choir were also in action at Stockport Town Hall singing at the Infant Choir Festival.

We enjoyed celebrating our 50th Anniversary during a special time capsule assembly – thank you for all of the support; it was great to be joined by so many parents, past pupils and friends of the school as well as Cllr Linda Holt, the Mayor of Stockport, and Mr Phil Beswick, Stockport’s Director of Education. Despite the rain we managed to make an event of it and then all of the children took part in our sponsored jog – they all did so well and we enjoyed being cheered on along the route – thank you! We’ve received over £1300 of sponsor money so far which is an amazing total to be split between Cancer Care UK and the PTA – please can any more sponsorship money be returned this week – thank you. The children really enjoyed our ‘street party’ celebrations in the afternoon and the PTA Picnic was also a lovely event and very well supported – thank you!

Our Sports Days went really well and the children took part brilliantly. Thank you again for the support – there has been a lot to take part in recently and it has been great to share these events with the school community; we appreciate the time you are giving up to support school and your children. The overall team winners were Robins in the infants and Kingfishers in the Juniors. There were many individual successes in our finals too.

Well done to our four Year 4 tennis stars who have come 6th overall in the Greater Manchester tennis tournament – with the finals taking place yesterday at Manchester Regional Arena. They got successfully through the first two rounds – beating off many Stockport teams to represent Stockport at the final against 20 other teams!

We are planning a ‘Summer Events’ page on the website with lots of photos from the summer term showing the above events and many more! We will let you know when this is available.

There’s a lot more to come too:

We have more musical performances at our Woodwind and Guitar assemblies. Woodwind are playing on Thursday 20th July at 9:30am and Guitar on Tuesday 25th July at 9:30am  - parents/relatives of our instrumentalists are welcome to join us.

Junior Production – ‘Alice in Wonderland’: letters have gone home to junior parents about how to order tickets and we can’t wait for the big show! The children can log-on to the VLE and practise the songs (they’re in the ‘Parents and Whole School Section’).

Alice in Wonderland Art Competition – we have some lovely entries to our competition and have extended the deadline until Monday so there is one more weekend to allow for final entries.

Leavers’ Assembly – our Year 6 will be performing their Leavers’ Assembly to their parents and relatives at 9:15am on Wednesday 26th July.

World Championship 800m medalist Jenny Meadows is coming in to assembly on Wednesday 12th July to talk to the children about athletics and the 800m, share some running tips, talk through a video of her world championship race and show the children her bronze medal! We will also talk about the IAAF and IPC World Championships which are in London this summer (http://www.london2017athletics.com/news/65324) – London’s biggest sporting events since the Olympics in 2012.

Jenny’s visit has kindly been organised by one of our Year 1 parents, Hermione’s dad, Dean Hardman, who works for England Athletics. Dean has also kindly offered free tickets for the upcoming Manchester International Event (http://www.englandathletics.org/athletes/england-athletics-team/england-athletics-team/manchester-international - follow the link on the website version of this newsletter!) to parents/carers from Lane End. Children can go free but entry for an adult is normally £5. It is taking place on Wednesday 16th August starting at 4:45pm and is at Manchester Regional Arena (formerly known as Sportscity). You can have up to 4 adult tickets per family – please fill in the slip and return it to school by Monday 17th July so we can allocate you your tickets.

‘Tour de Lane End’ Cycle to School Week  – Mr Vallance has organised our cycle to school week and this is taking place next week (10th – 14th July). Please ensure that your children are wearing a helmet if they are cycling to school. During the week’s Tour de Lane End, Year 4 commissaires will be awarding Yellow, Polka Dot, Green and White jersey certificates (plus a small prize) to 4 lucky children, who cycle to school, each day.

We have held a cycle to school week for the last two years which has been very successful and which have also included a slow bike race. We will be having a slow bike race again this year which will take place on Friday 14th July. Any children who cycle to school that day and have their helmet will be able to take part.

Open Evening – you are all warmly invited to join us for our open evening between 6pm and 8pm on Wednesday 12th July. We encourage you to look around the whole school and talk to your child’s class teacher from this year and introduce yourselves to your child’s class teacher for next year too.

Classes for next year - The teachers and teaching assistants for next year are shown below. All of the children will have a lesson with their new teacher before the summer holidays and carry out other transition activities too. We are very pleased to let you know that our Deputy Headteacher for September is going to be Mr Toyne (Monday to Thursday) and Mrs Toyne (Friday). We are also pleased to let you know that we have appointed Miss Kate Carter to teach in Year 5 for two days a week from September until the Easter holidays when staffing will be reviewed on Miss Rainey’s return from maternity leave. Mad Science Club – due to one of the sessions being advertised for an INSET day Mad Science will hold an extra session on Monday 24th July. This will be the last session.

Cookery Club (Years 1 to 4) – we are pleased that Kids’ Kitchen Cooking Club will be returning in September. Jo, who runs the club, would like to know how much interest there will be so, if you would like your child to attend, then please return the attached form by Monday 10th July. Thank you!

We aim to be approachable and work in partnership with parents, so if there is anything you wish to discuss, please do not hesitate to come and talk to us.

Yours sincerely,

James Twigg
