June - Newsletter 23 (16th June 2017)

Dear Parents/Carers,

Welcome back to the second half of the summer term – we hope you all had a lovely half term break. There’s a great deal planned, as always, for this half term and a great deal of exciting learning and opportunities in store for the children.

50th Anniversary Celebrations – Friday 23rd June 2017. Exactly 50 years since the school was officially opened in 1967 – which was also a Friday as shown on the programme!

9:30am – Time Capsule Ceremony. The PTA have kindly agreed to provide tea and coffee from 9am so you can stay at school following drop off if you’d like to see the ceremony – we’d love you to join us. It is taking place on the junior playground next to the garden (weather permitting – fingers crossed!). We will be burying the time capsule, singing some songs and talking a bit about Lane End Primary School. We hope to be joined by the Mayor of Stockport and Mr Phil Beswick, Stockport Local Authority’s Director of Education.

10:30am – Sponsored Jog. We have agreement from the council to close the roads along our jog route from 10:30 – 11:30am.  The route is about 1km and will be taken at a very sensible pace so everyone can join in – Year 6 will lead the way followed by Year 5 and then the other classes in order down the school. We will finish on the school field where the children will be able to have a drink and continue jogging if they have the energy! Staff are running with the classes too with some staff martialling the route! I have attached the letter which has been posted to local residents so that you can see exactly which roads are affected. We would really like to have as many people as possible cheering the children along so please do come and watch if you are available. Please also remember to help your children get sponsored for the event – half of the sponsor sheets are for Cancer Research UK and half for the PTA so we can split the money between the two charities. All of the children will be taking part and will receive a medal!

2pm – Street Party for the Children. This one is just for the children - we will be on the field with fun games and some snacks to add to the street party atmosphere.

6pm – PTA Picnic for the whole school community. Bring your own food and drink, a picnic rug or some chairs and have a lovely time! It is £1 entry for adults and free for children – all children must be accompanied by an adult who will be responsible for them. There will be a tombola, toy stall, tuck shop and bouncy castle so you may want to bring some extra cash too! We’d love to see you all there.

We will also have our physical timeline showing pictures and artefacts from Lane End’s history out again in the hall on Friday 23rd June. You are welcome to pop in after school or during the PTA picnic to have a look.

There was some great music around in 1967 and you may have heard some of the 50th Anniversary celebrations of the classic album ‘Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’ by the Beatles on the radio recently. The album also had a classic cover and Mrs Titterington has done a version for our staff which we thought you might like to see!

School Garden – we’d like to brighten the school garden up for our 50th Anniversary celebrations and will be doing some planting next week at lunchtimes. We’d love children to bring in a plant and plant it in the garden – geraniums, rebeccias, sweet William or other flowering perennials or bi-annuals would be great! We will be doing this Monday to Wednesday next week if you child would like to bring in a plant. Thank you!

Class Photographs – proofs were handed out yesterday and if you would like the class photo the replies are due back by the morning of 23rd June when we have to give them to Sovereign. Orders after this date need to be done online with Sovereign and occur a delivery charge. Thank you.

Sports Days – you are invited to our sports days which are on: Monday 26th June for the Infants and Monday 3rd July for the juniors. Letters are coming home to explain all the details. Both sports days start at 9:30am.

Cake Sale Success - It has been lovely to see the children’s desire to help others and Molly and Madison Minshall’s cake sale which they organised with their friends at the end of last half term in aid of the Manchester charities raised a fantastic £247.51. Well done Molly, Madison and friends – and thank you to their Mrs Minshall for all of the support and to everyone who provided cakes and bought them to raise money to support families affected by the tragedy in Manchester.

Staff News – Congratulations to Mrs Rogers who is pregnant and whose baby is due in November. Also to let you know that after 17 years at Lane End, Mrs Valentine is retiring from her role as teaching assistant at the end of this academic year. We thank her for her excellent work and wish her a very happy retirement. Congratulations as well to Mrs Gilbert who has a new role as a teaching assistant in a special school from September – we will miss her excellent work at Lane End and wish her all the best in her new job.

Halle Trip – Our musicians in Years 4 to 6 and our Junior Choir have a trip to ‘Come and Play with the Halle’ at the Bridgewater Hall on Tuesday next week. Children need to meet at the church (with their instruments!) at 8:45am so that we can leave promptly at 9am. If you haven’t responded on ParentPay please do so today so we can finalise the numbers. Thank you.

We aim to be approachable and work in partnership with parents, so if there is anything you wish to discuss, please do not hesitate to come and talk to us.

Yours sincerely,

James Twigg

Dear Resident,

This year is Lane End Primary School’s 50th Anniversary. As part of the celebrations there have been events throughout the school year and these will culminate on the 23rd June 2017 when a time capsule will be buried in the school garden and there will be a sponsored run around the local area. We would very much like the celebrations to include the wider school community, so the purpose of this letter is two-fold:

  1. To invite you to join us at 9.30am for a short ceremony in the school garden during which our time capsule will be buried; and/or to support us on our sponsored run around the immediate local area by standing on the pavements, putting any loose change you have in the buckets each class will be carrying and cheering us on!
  2. To make you aware that between 30am and 11.30am on Friday 23rd June 2017 Stockport Council have agreed to some road closures to help ensure our sponsored jog goes ahead safely. This means that there will be no access for cars or other vehicles during that time. The roads that will be closed are as follows:

Ramillies Avenue (from the junction with Blenheim Road to the school)

Hastings Close

Newhaven Close

Thornberry Close

Blenheim Road (numbers 1 – 6 and 8)

Marlborough Avenue (numbers 1 - 55 and  2 – 68)

We apologise for any inconvenience and we thank you for your understanding and support. We also hope that as members of the wider school community you are able to join in the celebrations. If you have any queries then please do not hesitate to contact me,

Thank you and best wishes,

James Twigg

(Headteacher, Lane End Primary School)
