September - Newsletter 2 (16th September 2014)
Dear Parents/Carers,
We’ve had an excellent start to term and the new Reception children are settling in very well indeed.
It’s great to see each class hard at work and enjoying their time in school. There are a few photos from yesterday below showing each class and we’ll start a new section in the ‘Our Work’ part of school website for each class soon. The children in Years 2 to 6 had their first French session of the year with Carole Lee from the ‘Language People’ and Year 3 started their gym coaching with Leandro from ‘Life Leisure’ – each class will receive gym coaching at some point during the year. Year 1 were busy with Muddy Monday in the afternoon and the Reception children were enjoying their first full day of school.
It is also lovely to see the infants enjoying their school dinners together. The Reception children had their first school lunch yesterday and it all seemed to go very well. Well done to Jayne our cook and all of the dinner staff for their hard work in getting the infant meals initiative ready for this September.
Most clubs started last week or are starting this week – please refer to the club list for details (also available on our website in the ‘Our School’ section). Thank you to all of the staff who give up time to take a club – we have a wide range for the children to get involved in. Thank you as well to Mrs Downing who ran the school choir last year and Mrs Stutfield who is running it this year – two parents who are volunteering in order to create this excellent musical experience for an increasing number of children.
On Monday next week the NSPCC are coming in to school to hold an assembly about their work. Following this we will be taking part in a sponsored event for the NSPCC – please watch out for more details next week so we can help this very worthwhile cause.
We have been talking about our School Values in assembly: Excellence, Determination, Inspiration, Respect, Courage, Equality, and Friendship (as you see on the top of each newsletter!). I have told the children about a competition I’d like as manyof the children to take part in as possible. Simply choose one of the values and create a poster illustrating that value – it can name the value and have pictures and/or slogans which illustrate and explain the value. The best entries will be professionally printed so that they can be displayed in the hall and around school – there will also be some prizes for the overall winner from the infants and juniors. Children should bring their entry to school by Monday 13th October – please make sure your child’s full name is on the back. Entries can be on any paper in any media (pen, crayon, paint, collage etc). Children can work together if they’d like to and enter as many times as they want. Good luck!
The first PTA meeting of the academic year is on Wednesday at 7:30pm (held in the school staffroom). Everyone is welcome – please do come along and see how you can help. Thank you.
There is a PTA disco for the children on Friday 17th October. More details will come home soon.

SOCIAL NETWORKING: a message from all local Headteachers
“Getting rid of something on the internet is often as impossible as rubbing a star out of the sky.”
Headteachers at all primary schools in the local area wish to issue some reminders regarding the safe use of the internet and mobile devices. Whilst the internet and mobile devices bring many benefits, they also can bring potential problems. Many of the children have developed skills to use mobile devices effectively, but if these devices aren’t used appropriately then they do not necessarily have the emotional maturity to understand the consequences of their actions.
Schools across the country have seen a growing number of problems with children and young people posting items online using Youtube, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Oovoo and other similar sites on computers, mobile phones, tablets etc.
Children can make themselves vulnerable on these sites as they do not always know who can access their postings or how their postings can be used. Sometimes the things posted are ill-advised, inappropriate and, in a small number of cases, critical of other pupils. All too often the reaction is far from positive. The items are seen and discussed by other pupils, who may become upset and then retaliate. This then inevitably comes into school and becomes a distraction from learning. An upset pupil is not a pupil who can concentrate properly at school. Parents may also be drawn in and upset between families can occur.
In school we work hard to teach the children about the safe use of the internet. The recommended age range for many of the above accounts is 13+ and we urge all parents to carefully consider whether they allow their child to set up or hold such accounts. If your child does have any of these accounts please monitor their use carefully and help ensure that they are being responsible.
As we are sure you are aware, no pupil should ever post details of themselves on the internet (full name, address, email address, telephone number) and parents should monitor their child’s use of the internet.
Please note: Schools have been advised to take the firmest action, including involvement with the police, against any posting where the defamation of character of any member of staff occurs.
Thank you for your continued support.
